About us

Montacute is a specialist school for 85 young people with Complex Learning Difficulties or Disabilities.  We educate some of the most complex pupils in Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset.  Whilst our students have undoubted skills and abilities they also struggle to overcome profound difficulties.  Many are on the autistic spectrum, others have sensory impairment, physical disabilities or high medical needs.  All have problems with communication and learning.

The school’s belief is that each child, no matter how severe their difficulties, can learn and that we must provide a tailored provision that meets their specific needs.”

We were lucky enough to have our school completely re-built  but unfortunately the original budget was slashed from £12 million to £5 million and so, in effect, we received an empty shell.

We have worked very hard (and are eternally grateful to all our wonderful donors and partners) to equip the school with the complex equipment our students need to be able to fully engage with learning safely and with dignity - ceiling hoists, specialist toilets, communication equipment, sensory room and soft play area, but we cannot yet provide a similarly stimulating external learning and sensory environment.  Our new school sits on a heavily remodelled site and virtually none of our old equipment survived the building process and move.

Our school grounds could inspire our pupils - the potential is there – as we have an extensive wooded area, hard standing waiting to house exciting play equipment and great plans for a sensory garden. This vision is brought to life in Step Outside our phased masterplan which gives details of the foregoing and much more – outdoor gym, nature trail, cycle area, water feature and our market garden.

Outside play is vital to children with special needs as it really helps alleviate tension and helps them become less stressed.  The right equipment is therapeutic and provides a stimulating experience as well as influencing behavior and development.

We need your help to turn our amazing plans into reality.

Thank you so much for your support and good luck!

Kind regards

Ginny Bellard
