In August 2018 HHNCI re-established the Coastguard Station on the top of Hengistbury Head to provide 'eyes along the coast' from Barton-on-Sea to the east through Christchurch and Poole bays and 12 miles out to sea.
85 qualified Watchkeepers - volunteers who have been trained to a national standard - keep watch over all leisure and commercial water users within, or passing through, our area as well as shore and coastal path users from 08:00 to 17:00 during winter hours and 08:00 to 20:00 in the summer.
To date (Feb 2020) Hengistbury Head NCI has been involved in over 70 incidents and our Watchkeepers have spent a total of almost 2000 hours on duty.
Each of the 56 Stations that make up the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is self funding and relies entirely on the generousity of the public in order to maintain and enhance its operations - this includes equipment, building maintenance, Watchkeeper training, literature etc.
